PROJECT 2: GENIUS LOCI- SITE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN CONCEPT
![]() PULAU JEREJAKSituated in the proximities of Pulau Pinang, the island was lastly used as Defence Mechanism for the British during their time of colonisation. not only that happened to the Island in its past History, it shelters a Detention Center constituted of lastly 12 blocks, which today only 3 of them are still existant. For this project, the main aim was to enhance the 5 major senses of the human kind through poetic spaces implying all the possible architectural assets available. The task assigned in this case to obtain such product, was to study a poem and translate it into architectural language, meaning into a concrete design. Thus, in order to do so, precedent studies of a Linear and a Concentric oriented building was our first task before designing our own poetic spaces.
In our group's case, we studied Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey and Rokko Chapel, Mont Rokko, Japan by Tadao Ando, each of them being distinctively Concentric and Linear in terms of Circulation and Flow.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Acquisition of the ability to identify a Concentric or Linear oriented space.
2. Ability to design and understand the function of a Concentric or Linear space.
3. Understanding of the translation of poetic assets into Architectural Medias.
4. Ability to engage the 5 human senses.
5. A better understanding in terms of shape employment (By understanding the poetic function of the space, a more humble and radical judgement in terms of shape is taken into consideration)
6. Creating a living narration through architectural language; creating an environment in-between times.
After our study trip to pulau Jerejak, a Site Analysis was to be done, but for this semester, also a personal analysis through sketches was to be executed which was supposed to lead each student to a Design Concept with proper response to the Site History, Context and Spirit, in other words, Designing according to the Genius Loci of the Place.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Understanding the spirit of a place
2. Learning of how to response to a site
3. Better understanding of Site to Space and Space to Site
4. A better response to the idea of creating spaces with living feelings within
5. By incorporating Project 1, being able to understand the place itself, and response to it according in a unique way of the exposed user to the site.

PROJECT 3: DESIGNING A VISITORS' INTERPRETIVE CENTRE
In Relationship to project 1 & 2, the last project is about designing according to a programmatic basis incorporating the function of space and its poetics. The main aim of this project was to incorporate feelings within spaces in a medium size building of 450 m sq, by creating a poetic flow and letting the spaces speaking for the site. The Objective of this project was to let the unique identity of the VIC speaks of its own through its architecture.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. A better understanding of the site for a better incorporation.
2. Ability to design unique spaces speaking of their own through the site context and site history
3. A better understanding of the term GENIUS LOCI
4. Ability to incorporate the soul of the place itself within the spaces by composing a living design concept according to the site itself.
5. Ability to communicate ideas through architectural language, meaning through designs.
